How Does It Work?

Breathwork taps into the central nervous system to calm the mind and purify the body. By entering a trance-like state, it becomes easier to surrender and release trapped emotions and trauma. Long, rapid breathing temporarily suppresses the activity of the prefrontal cortex, which is associated with the ego. This allows us to detach from the physical body and the identity of who we ‘think’ we are, creating space for profound healing within the psyche. Breathwork enables the subconscious and unconscious mind to bring forward whatever is ready to be fully processed and released, facilitating deep emotional and spiritual transformation.

Breathwork decreases carbon dioxide levels in the body while increasing the pH of our blood to around 7.3 to 7.4 pH, creating a more alkaline state. This alkalinity is preferable to an acidic state, which can be caused by factors like high sugar intake, processed foods, alcohol, and stress, all of which can contribute to the development of disease. In an alkaline environment, the body functions at its best: oxygen delivery to tissues is optimized, cellular functions are enhanced, inflammation is reduced, bone health is supported, and the body’s natural detoxification processes are more efficient. Breathwork, therefore, not only promotes a more balanced internal environment but also supports overall health and resilience.

Good mental, emotional, and spiritual health is just as vital as physical health. Through breathwork, we can bring awareness to both the physical and energetic body, enhancing immunity, vitality, and the flow of prana (life force) throughout. Just as we prioritize cleaning the outside of our body, cleansing our internal systems is arguably even more crucial. Breathwork serves this purpose by purifying and detoxifying the body, sending oxygen to every cell and activating the central nervous system. Coupled with breath control and a daily meditation practice, breathwork helps release deep-seated trauma that the spirit or soul may carry, sometimes across lifetimes. It empowers us to take control of our own mind, bringing greater consciousness into every aspect of our lives. This is true holistic health, achievable through spiritual practices such as regular breathwork, meditation, yoga, mantra, tai chi, and other forms of energy movement.
